Descanso Gardens has a rich history dating back to 1937, when newspaper publisher E. Manchester Boddy purchased the estate and began developing its now-famous camellia and rose collections.

The estate was originally called Rancho del Descanso (“Ranch of Rest”).
Expert horticulturalists like Dr. Walter E. Lammerts and J. Howard Asper helped grow the gardens’ world-class camellia collection.
In 1953, the property was sold to Los Angeles County and opened to the public.
Today, Descanso Gardens is recognized as a National Register of Historic Places site and a “museum of living collections.”
