🌸 A Brief History of Descanso Gardens
Descanso Gardens has a rich history dating back to 1937, when newspaper publisher E. Manchester Boddy purchased the estate and began developing its now-famous camellia and rose collections.
-
The estate was originally called Rancho del Descanso (“Ranch of Rest”).
-
Expert horticulturalists like Dr. Walter E. Lammerts and J. Howard Asper helped grow the gardens’ world-class camellia collection.
-
In 1953, the property was sold to Los Angeles County and opened to the public.
-
Today, Descanso Gardens is recognized as a National Register of Historic Places site and a “museum of living collections.”
This unique mix of history, art, and horticulture makes Descanso Gardens one of the most beloved Los Angeles attractions.
